How microbes inside you affect how well you sleep
Recent studies show that the bacteria inside our gut and mouth can play an important role that how well we sleep. Previously, scientists believed that poor sleep can disturb microbes, but a recent study proves that it can affect both ways; microbes can also affect our quality of sleep.
Researchers have found that people with more diverse gut and oral bacteria can enjoy longer and deeper sleep. In contrast, people with less diversity in these bacteria can struggle with insomnia and irregular sleep. This imbalance can encourage problems such as low weight gain, weak immunity, and poor metabolism.
Experts say that these microbes release chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which are important for our body clock and mood. Unbalanced microbes caused by an unhealthy diet, irregular schedule, and even stress result in problems like insomnia and sleep apnea.
Early experiment shows that when transferring microbes to mice from people with insomnia, it has resulted in sleeplessness in animals, hinting that it has a direct biological link. While human trials on early stages, some small studies suggest that taking probiotics and prebiotics can improve the quality of sleep naturally and promote healthy bacteria in the gut.
Studies have not been completed yet, but it tells till now, managing our microbiome can be a future treatment for insomnia, jet lag, and shift work fatigue without taking any pills.
